I barely just started book 7 but I'm already a bit wary of it, hope it gets better though. Pa had way more depth and Filip went through great character development but somehow I still wasn't interested in them, and there wasn't enough of the Roci & co to keep my attention for long. Such a shame because this universe is brimming with fascinating characters, and they couldn't get a better one for the book's "big bad"? Eh. I don't think he was particularly well written, his motives were never made clear, had no depth of character. I only could see him as this obsessive, annoying asshole. Also, even though Marco destroyed Earth and a lot of other stuff, I don't think he was a great villain/opponent/whatever. The Expanse airs December 14th, 2015, and the first season will run for 10. We even meet Chrisjen Avasarala a season early, a decision which totally makes sense, if they want to play up the interplanetary drama. Pa, Marco, Filip, didn't really see the point of bringing back Prax. Thomas Jane, who plays the misunderstood and amoral Detective Miller, is equal parts hatable and crazy and he’s the perfect fit. SPOILERS for Babylon's Ashes from here on out: I think the material was stretched way too thin, I didn't care about a lot of characters eg. frankly I had to force myself sometimes to keep on reading. But if it's happening I'm I agree with you on book 6. I'm down for a book club but is there enough interest? I think we tried a Stephen King one a while back but it pretty much failed. I think part of why season 1 was a bit of a mess in the beginning was because they had to mix up the first two books to have a larger scope of what's going on on Earth etc. It gives a lot more insight into their characters, especially Miller. The first book is quite unique because there are only two POV's, Holden and Miller. That being said I'd recommend the first two also. Now, available in print for the first time comes the complete collection of short fiction set in the Expanse universe, including both a brand-new novella set after the events of Leviathan Falls and author’s notes on each story.I think you can get away with not reading the first two books, but the third one is pretty different, they changed several storylines as well as omitted POV characters, so it's worth reading. That said, if you want to read the series in a chronological order, better start with the prequels. You can read the prequel stories after this one, especially The Churn and The Butcher of Anderson Station so you’ll know the characters. The Expanse Universe really starts with the first novel, Leviathan Wakes. Then, very similar to stem cells, the protomolecule began to use this replicator to grow, alter and adapt itself according to hard-coded prime directive. In its primordial form, the protomolecule was the idle, dormant agent being activated when a replication mechanism was encountered. What is the Protomolecule in The Expanse?

While the TV version of The Expanse thus far has more or less lined up with the overall narrative of the first five novels in the series, there have been some shifts in the timeline and continuity throughout. You can read in the order they were published, or be truly chaotic and read everything in absolutely no order at all. You can read chronologically, and really walk through the timeline with the characters. You can read the books first, and then explore the short stories, novellas, and comics later.
